Only performance counts: GEA raises the bar for heat pumps to 95 °C

11 Oct 2022

GEA Heating & Refrigeration Technologies continues to consistently expand its heat pump portfolio. This was presented by GEA on the occasion of the world's leading trade fair for refrigeration and heating technology, CHILLVENTA 2022 in Nuremberg/Germany. The GEA RedGenium heat pump combined with the brand new GEA Grasso V XHP reciprocating compressor enables the provision of temperatures of 95 °C at the best efficiency.

The GEA RedGenium heat pump combined with the brand new GEA Grasso V XHP reciprocating compressor enables the provision of temperatures of +95 °C at the best efficiency.

In addition to the temperature plus, the largest V XHP compressor also offers almost double the capacity compared to previous as well as benchmark models. The new GEA Grasso V XHP reciprocating compressor series thus sets new standards and the bar high. The new GEA solution ideally complements the existing heat pump portfolio, as it is perfectly suited for many processes with high heat load requirements. These include applications in the food, beverage, and dairy industries. The temperature level also meets the criteria for space heating, district, and local heating networks.

Best efficiencies in the +95 °C class

Electrically driven heat pumps can replace conventional fossil fuel-based heating systems. They use either available process waste heat or other heat sources from the environment and transfer the heat to a high temperature level. Even when powered with electricity entirely from fossil based generation a heat pump, thanks to its extremely high efficiency, is much more sustainable consuming just about a third of primary energy compared to a classic boiler to provide the same heating capacity.

GEA's industrial "Red" heat pumps are a proven concept and widely used by international customers in various industries and sectors. This is also due to the key figures. Combined with the natural refrigerant ammonia at low charge levels, the technology offers the best efficiencies in its class. The most important parameter that significantly reduces energy consumption and overall costs, thus ensuring a significantly improved ROI (return on investment).

A future-proof system

“Heat accounts for more than half of the global total final energy consumption. Despite best efforts, today it is still mainly produced using fossil fuels. If we are to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels, we need a real game changer. When it comes to decarbonizing heat, heat pump technology with its proven track record is just that. Using heat pumps to cool our warming planet must become common sense”, says Kai Becker, CEO of GEA Heating & Refrigeration Technologies.

“Our heat pumps are a future-proof solution that can help companies”, says Thomas Lergenmüller, Product Manager Heat Pumps at GEA Heating & Refrigeration Technologies. He explains, "Future-proofed not only in terms of stricter environmental guidelines and ecological requirements, but also in terms of economic aspects. " Well planned, Thomas Lergenmüller says, an efficient heat pump can immediately save on operating costs compared to conventional heating systems. This doesn't even take into account rising CO2 taxes or the significant increase in fossil fuel costs.

Development of the new GEA Grasso V XHP series in ‘s-Hertogenbosch (Netherlands)

The new GEA Grasso V XHP reciprocating compressor series has been developed by GEA's piston factory in ‘s-Hertogenbosch (The Netherlands). It includes four models that will still be available from 2022 and 2023. Incorporated into GEA's proven RedGenium heat pump concept, customers get a complete, reliable, efficient, and lean solution - a key element for factories and communities on the road to climate neutrality.

Background

How GEA technology works: from heat pump to heat decoupling

Heat pumps convert renewable or waste energy from buildings and industrial processes and turn it into usable heat. When cooling, cooling systems release heat from a condenser, which is normally simply released into the environment. The heat pump captures this valuable resource and then raises the temperature to produce heat suitable for other production purposes. GEA's industrial heat pumps range from 300 kW to 15 MW, which means they can handle almost any application from hot wash water to city-wide district heating. GEA has the advantage of being able to combine extensive process knowledge and expertise in integrated heating and cooling solutions with sustainable solutions for the benefit of customers around the world.
