GEA speaks at symposia for scientists and young academics in the brewing industry

03 Sep 2018

In September 2018, GEA will take part in two scientific events on brewery topics. The first, “Recent Advances in Hop Science,” will be a symposium hosted by the European Brewery Convention which is dedicated to the current developments taking place around hop research and refinement (September 9-11, 2018, Nuremberg/Spalt). The second, the international “Young Scientist Symposium,” is organized by the University of Applied Sciences in Trier and the Bitburger Brewery. It is ideal for Ph.D. students and junior scientists from the disciplines of biology and chemistry or sensory science and engineering and for those involved in malting, brewing or distillation (September 12-14, 2018, Bitburg/Trier).

GEA Hopstar Dry

“Our brewery business has taken us to customers around the world for decades. We combine this invaluable experience with our commitment to new technological developments to match the trends in the industry. Environmentally conscious, resource-friendly brewing that optimizes operating costs is certainly the most important goal for all market participants right now,” explains Andreas Holleber, Head of Application Center Beverages & Beer at GEA. “GEA is a pioneer in many technologies. We are only able to achieve this because we put a lot of effort into the development phase. We will use both symposiums to share our knowledge, consider suggestions and present ourselves as a promising employer that challenges and encourages young, ambitious employees.”

Using hops efficiently

GEA's presentation on hops science will deal with energy and resource efficiency as key factors for achieving a highly efficient production process. With its HOPSTAR™ family, GEA has developed a product line that improves hop utilization in the brewhouse and cold block in terms of process efficiency and quality. Standard hops metering feeders for pellets and extracts supplement the process lines. GEA will present innovative technologies for processing hops. Industrial tests show the potential of thermal pre-isomerization and GEA's optimized process for dry hopping, which enables the sustainable use of resources.

Green brewing

During the “Young Scientist Symposium,” GEA will participate in the “Process Innovations in Technology” poster session, in which the company will discuss processes and technologies for sustainable brewing. GEA will present classic energy recovery systems and show how to reduce evaporation rates, integrate alternative sources of energy and heat, and consider individual geographic and climatic requirements. Current market trends and a concept study for an energy and resource efficient brewery will also be presented. Likewise, GEA will chair the “Technology & Yeast” session.
