The other 50 percent
Meet GEA at Fenagra 2024 in Sao Paulo and get to know the newest solutions for the processing of animal by-products and edible oil refining
Around 50 percent of an animal raised for meat production cannot be consumed directly. Among the so-called co- or by-products that accrue during slaughtering are fats, bones, blood, leftover meat, feathers and some internal organs. These co-products are valuable resources for oils and fats, proteins, collagen, gelatine, pet food, feed but also for biofuels or fertilizer.
Without further processing those resources would end up as food waste. So, the rendering industry plays an important part in our economies and societies: they take care of the proper management
of co-products but also fallen animals to prevent health and food risks and they save millions of tons of valuable resources every year from becoming food waste.
GEA is a proud partner of the rendering industry already for decades supporting them with process lines and separation expertise to create as much value as possible from the other 50 percent of meat production.
Our centrifuges, processing lines and know-how is used in fat-processing plants to obtain edible and technical fats, for separating animal blood into plasma and meal, to process bones and skins into gelatine or collagen and to extract the proteins from the raw materials to obtain hydrolyzates.
