不管具体的应用是什么，流化床都可用于加工悬浮在空气或气体层中的产品。工艺气体通过特殊的孔板来传送，并以足够支撑流化状态的颗粒重量的速度流经流化床层。气泡在物料的流化床内形成并破裂，促使颗粒剧烈运动。在这种状态下，固体运转如同自由流动的沸腾液体。
作为密切接触固体以及个体颗粒和流动气体之间速度差异的结果，会产生非常高的热传递和质量传递值。
