Whooping Cough Solution for Beijing Biotech Company

Beijing Tiantan Biological Products Co. Ltd (Tiantan Bio) operates as a subsidiary of the National Vaccine and Serum Institute (NVSI) and is primarily engaged in the research, development and production of bacterial and viral vaccines, blood derivatives, diagnostic reagents and various biopharmaceutical products.

Needing a new fermentation system, the company contacted GEA. After several site visits and a period of close collaboration, a quote was prepared that resulted in Tiantan Bio undertaking a series of projects with GEA in Hildesheim, Germany.

After initial detail engineering work, the company’s first order comprised two seed fermenters (50 and 500 L), two 5000 L production fermenters, a clean-in-place (CIP) system and three auxiliary tanks (acid [50 L], caustic [50 L], antifoam [50 L]) to process a pertussis vaccine.

Subsequently, Tiantan Bio invested in further process vessels and a salting out system to produce a diphtheria vaccine, and then made additional purchases, including downstream purification equipment and a formulation system, to make a hepatitis B vaccine.

With all the plant in place and operational, it was important for Tiantan Bio to ensure maximum throughput and minimize any potential downtime. Turning again to GEA for assistance, the company signed up to a number of annual maintenance and service contracts to ensure regular routine checks, any necessary overhauls and to troubleshoot any functionality issues.

Now installed and operational, Tiantan has added Acellular Pertussis Combined Vaccine Adsorbed to its portfolio of products that help a multitude of people to live better, safer and healthier lives.
