Taking Blood Plasma Fractionation Further

Blood plasma fractionation plant

Plasma fractionation refers to the overall process of separating the various components of blood-derived plasma. Blood plasma is the liquid component of whole blood and makes up approximately 55% of its total volume. Composed primarily of water with small amounts of dissolved minerals, salts, ions, nutrients and proteins in solution, it provides a transport and storage medium for the red blood cells, leukocytes and platelets that are suspended within it.

Plasma fractionation products are widely used in a variety of medical fields, including neurology, immunology, hematology, pulmonology, oncology, rheumatology, critical care and others.

Cutting-edge equipment

From controlled precipitation, centrifugation and filtration to solid/liquid separation, thermal and chemical inactivation, ultrafiltration/diafiltration, nanofiltration, chromatography and precise temperature control, GEA’s extensive experience in the area of plant-specific process implementation has been established by successfully completing numerous projects for many customers during the past 20 years. Our unparalleled expertise guarantees the absolute purity of isolated proteins and gap-free traceability along the entire process chain. From controlled precipitation, centrifugation and filtration for solid/liquid separation, thermal and chemical inactivation, ultrafiltration/diafiltration, nanofiltration, chromatography and precise temperature control, GEA’s extensive experience in the area of plant-specific process implementation has ensured the successful completion of numerous projects for many customers around the world. Our unparalleled expertise ensures the purity of isolated proteins and gap-free traceability along the entire process chain.

At GEA, we know that the design, build and installation of a fractionation plant and its equipment is an extremely complex and demanding undertaking.

We understand that the process is not just a simple progression of production stages and, as a result, we highlight aspects such as pH adjustment and ethanol dosing to precipitate the required fractions, the implementation of suitable virus inactivation steps and both automation and validation of the entire system. We also offer a wide range of cleaning options, from mobile, independent systems to diverse clean-in-place (CIP) satellites fed with conditioned cleaning solutions.

Whatever it is you need your process plant for, our portfolio of modular concepts will enable any task to be performed and take account of any requirements or conditions. We have a long history of designing machinery and installing equipment for both Cohn fractionation and downstream processing (such as centrifuges, freeze dryers, formulation systems, etc.) in a wide range of facilities. We’re ready to accept any new challenge and look forward to hearing from you.

Did you know?

Fractionating human blood plasma yields purified and concentrated proteins from which drugs or vaccines can then be developed. The blood plasma fractionation process is complex and requires in-depth knowledge of both the procedure and the specific equipment needed to achieve high yields in a cost-effective timeframe.
