From apprentice to trainer

Sam Bauer
Trainer, Plant Mechanic Apprentices

Sam Bauer

Sam Bauer changed gears after finishing his vocational diploma, steering his career in a direction he knew would suit him best. After completing an apprenticeship in plant mechanics, he now uses those same skills and passion to train and mentor the next generation of plant mechanics at GEA.

“After finishing secondary school, I wasn’t sure what to do,” says Sam Bauer, now a trainer of plant mechanic apprentices at GEA. “I initially completed a vocational diploma in business administration, but quickly realized that my passion lay in hands-on work.” Inspired by time spent with his father tinkering on cars in the garage, Sam decided to apply for an apprenticeship as an plant mechanic at GEA. “It turned out to be the best decision of my life,” he says. “Those three and a half years flew by, and I learned something new every day.”

Even during his apprenticeship, Sam stood out for his dedication, taking on projects and supporting the apprentice training program at GEA’s Oelde site in Germany. His commitment didn’t go unnoticed: “In my third year, I had the chance to assist as a junior trainer – and I loved it right away. When the full-time trainer role opened up directly after finishing my apprenticeship, I applied and got the job. Since then, I haven’t looked back.”

Sam’s perspective on what makes a great trainer

Becoming a great trainer requires patience, engagement, and the ability to inspire others – a combination Sam embodies every day.

Sam is known for his calm and patient approach. These are qualities he honed through his hobbies. “I’m passionate about fishing,” he explains. “Fishing teaches you patience, focus, and perseverance. I apply that same mindset in my work. Sometimes you need to explain things to apprentices two, three or even four times before it clicks; and that’s okay. You can’t get frustrated. It’s important to give people the time they need.”

This patience pays off. Today, Sam not only trains apprentices but also serves on the examination committee, preparing his trainees for their final tests. “It’s incredible to see apprentices start as young adolescents and leave as young adults. Watching their growth and development makes me truly proud.”

Sam’s motto for his apprentices is clear: “You don’t always have to be the best, but you should always aim to give just a little bit more than those around you. That’s how you reach your goals.” He also believes that being yourself is key: “At GEA, you don’t need to pretend to be someone you’re not. Everyone can be themselves here, and that’s so important.”

Building bonds that last a lifetime

At GEA, meaningful connections, individuality and health come together to create a workplace where you can truly thrive.

One of Sam’s highlights at GEA is the annual introductory trip for apprentices. “Back in 2018, I attended as an apprentice myself, and now I get to join as a trainer,” he says.
“It’s incredible to see apprentices from 13 locations  come together, bond, and grow as a group. It feels like a big family. These experiences build connections that last a lifetime.”

Individuality is embraced at GEA

Sam’s passion for tattoos reflects his individuality. “At first, I was hesitant about how tattoos would be perceived in a professional setting, especially during my apprenticeship,” he admits. “But at GEA, I quickly realized that there’s no judgment here. No one has ever said anything negative; in fact, it’s quite the opposite. People accept you as you are. That’s one of the things I love most about working at GEA: Individuality and personality are celebrated and respected here.”

At GEA, you don’t need to pretend to be someone you’re not. Everyone can be themselves here, and that’s so important.

Leading by example for future generations

In his free time Sam stays active and prioritizes a healthy lifestyle. “Fitness helps me clear my head and stay energized,” he says. “For me, that also includes eating healthy.” This personal commitment aligns perfectly with GEA’s mission: “To safeguard future generations.” Sam explains, “It’s important to me that future generations can live healthy, sustainable lives. I see that reflected both in GEA’s values and in the way I live my own life.”

Sam’s journey shows just how rewarding and diverse a career at GEA can be. From starting as an apprentice to becoming a trainer, Sam is proof that hard work and commitment open doors. “If you’re willing to give your best, the opportunities at GEA are endless,” he says.
